Analysis： Body1: 科学的根本目的就是要造福广大人民。正是因为现代社会需要，很多人需要，才有科学家发现问题解决问题的动力。因此，把精力专注于可以造福大多数人们的领域的确是应该的。 Body2: 但是，一味把精力放在对大部分人们有好处的领域也是有害的。第一，很多好处不是即时的，也就是说，我们无法断定现在的发现和研究在以后不会对人们有好处；第二，科学领域之间是相辅相成的，一个领域的发展很多时候需要依靠其他学科进行深入挖掘和发展。比如说，医药方面的研究和发展对于广大人民是有很多好处的，但是很多医学方面的进步是通过对于其他生物的研究实现的。因此，专注于生物学也是应该的。 Body3: 实际上，我们不能只是把精力放在几个领域。根据上述内容，学科时间是紧密联系的，任何一个科学家和研究学者都无法确定自己只是对某一领域进行研究而不涉及其他领域的知识。 句型及词汇补充： be conducive to sth. satisfy the demands motivate the scientists to make breakthroughs concentrate on fixate on territory = field = domain = area be detrimental to sth. interdependent rely on stretch into new parameters |

Argument 1 In surveys Mason City residents rank water sports (swimming, boating, and fishing) among their favorite recreational activities. The Mason River flowing through the city is rarely used for these pursuits, however, and the city park department devotes little of its budget to maintaining riverside recreational facilities. For years there have been complaints from residents about the quality of the river's water and the river's smell. In response, the state has recently announced plans to clean up Mason River. Use of the river for water sports is, therefore, sure to increase. The city government should for that reason devote more money in this year's budget to riverside recreational facilities. |

"Throughout the country last year, as more and more children below the age of nine participated in youth-league sports, over 40,000 of these young players suffered injuries. When interviewed for a recent study, youth-league soccer players in several major cities also reported psychological pressure exerted by coaches and parents to win games. Furthermore, education experts say that long practice sessions for these sports take away time that could be used for academic activities. Since the disadvantages outweigh any advantages, we in Parkville should discontinue organized athletic competition for children under nine." |

Fallacies: 1. 论据中提到有四万多名小运动员受伤。看似这个数字很大，但我们不清楚这些受伤的孩子占所有小运动员的比例是多少，如果比例不高，那么不是大问题，属于正常现象。其次，在这四万多名受伤的小运动员中，9岁以下的孩子数量也不清楚，假如这个年龄段受伤孩子的比例是所有年龄段受伤孩子中比例最低的，那么文中的论证逻辑不对。另外，我们不知道受伤的伤势是怎样。 2. 我们不知道youth-league soccer players in several major cities能不能代表所有参加各种体育运动的孩子。如果其他运动项目或其他城市的孩子没有感到压力，那么作者的论证不成立。另外，压力的来源是不一定的。 3. 作者引用教育专家的论述，但是我们不知道这些专家是否专业、客观。 |
